Monday 24 September - Chania

Sunrise: Chania                   7:13am
Sunset:                                 7:18pm
Steps:                                   12,831

Cabin 9219 on the ferry.
Very comfortable bed.
We had arranged to meet Christina at reception at 6:45am this morning, so I set my alarm for 5:45, giving myself plenty of time.  We had stowed our main luggage on the car deck, so only had a carry-on in the cabin.
I woke around 5:30 and decided to get up anyway and have a shower.  Just as I got into the bathroom, there was an announcement that we would shortly be arriving at the port in Chania (pronounced Hania).  About 5 or so minutes later, there was another announcement, saying that disembarkation had already started. This was around 5:45am.  Instead of sitting in the cabin, I decided to go down to reception anyway and hand the cabin key back in and found that there were a couple of our group already down at reception waiting.
Eventually everyone arrived and Christina, so we walked down to the car deck, picked up our luggage and wheeled it off the ferry and onto our Crete bus. Yannis is our driver for a few days. we also met the local guide, Andreas.
We drove from the port to our hotel, the Hotel Kydon, so we could drop our bags off, have some breakfast and then go on a walking tour of the town.
While eating breakfast I noticed a building across the road. The entrance made me think that it might be a railway station. Don't ask me why I thought that, because it's not.
The building across the road from the hotel is the Market place
That was our first port of call on our walking tour.  It's becoming very touristy and less fruit & veg and fish and meat type market.  We walked through the market and out the back entrance to walk along one of the many 'shopping' streets. We walked along a few streets until we came to the Cathedral of the Presentation of the Virgin Mary.
We then continued along down to the port.

We then had free time to take some photos, before regrouping and continuing on the walk.

Neoria

This time through the Old Town.

We then walked back through the Market Place and boarded the bus, to visit the Suda Bay War Cemetery.

We then continued on to Manousakis Winery.
A very old olive tree

We were given an introduction about how the winery was established, then a walk through the winery with more explanations, then back to a shaded area, where we sat and had a wine tasting, complimented with twice baked bread (Paximadia) which is a specialty of Crete and I'm sure a dentists, delight but very delicious, with an assortment of cheeses and some fruit and nuts.

After that it was back to the hotel and we received our room keys. Our luggage had already been taken to our rooms. I'm in room 321.
Like a number of other hotels on this tour, there is an outdoor balcony with a table & 2 chairs, primarily for the smokers but it's great for putting the washing out there, as it dries much quicker than inside.

I was planning on publishing this earlier today but time just got away from me.  Better late than never.
